A 35-year-old member asked:

Depends : The location and size of the cavity may determine how and if the cavity is filled. Dentists have used a number of techniques in treating small cavities, from sealants, and a number of different restorative materials. In the past, the old drill and fill was the primary technique used. With the advent of newer technology, some offices are using lasers to remove the decay with less discomfort.

Yes, possibly.: Laser dentistry is becoming more common and some can remove a cavity instead of using a drill. Sometimes you don't even need anesthetic (shots). The cavity is then filled (restored) with whatever material you and your dentist decide is best. If you are really interested in laser dentistry i would search out a dentist that has a hard tissue laser.

To what extent does laser cavity removal cost?

Depends on severity: Depends of the amour of work required to resolve your problem, the fee schedule your dentists feels is appropriate, and the general cost of doing similar service in your area. Ask your dentist. Remember, dentistry is a service, not a commodity. Fees are based on the amount of service that needs to be done for you.

Varies..: Each office has it's own fee schedule, so you'll have to ask the office where you will be treated. It also depends on the size of the restoration and the material used to restore the tooth. There is no one universal answer to give you.

Depends: On the size of the cavity and your tolerance for minor discomfort. Worst case - you ask the dentist to stop and give you a shot of local anesthetic
