Absolutely: You should arm yourself with a sonicare electric toothbrush and a waterpik. Take these to your dental hygienist and ask for detailed instruction on their use at your next cleaning visit. You should have a cleaning every 4 months to keep things optimally clean. You might also use a Fluoride rinse daily -- ask your orthodontist about their recommendations on fluoride. Good luck !

2 problems: If you don't clean the "danger zone, " the area between the braces and the gum line, you can get cavities next to your braces. If you eat hard/sticky/chewy foods you can partially dislodge braces and get cavities behind the braces. What to do: see a qualified orthodontic specialist and follow his/her directions to the letter (no cheating) to prevent problems.

Cavities under brace: Yes cavities will form under, around and besides braces. You must clean your mouth after every time you eat anything. So plan your meals and snacks accordingly. A an aside most people with braces become fitter and trimmer as they refrain from over snacking and eat food that stick less to their braces like fruits and vegetables.
