A member asked:

Should i be concerned if my 7 week old daughter has endocarditis, should a picc line be inserted?

Serious: Endocarditis is a serious infection, typically bacterial, of the heart. Most children with endocarditis have congenital heart disease. Endocarditis can be life threatening. Endocarditis requires prolonged IV antibiotic administration, typically 6 weeks in duration. Most of the time, this is most easily administered through a picc (peripherally inserted central catheter) line.

PICU treatment: Endocarditis is a serious but treatable infection. Your physicians will monitor her cardiac status and perform serial cardiac echography. The course of antibiotics is longer than for most childhood infections. The PICC line is more stable than an ordinary i.v.
