Generally: White lesions are benign. Lesions that come and go are generally benign. It is the reddish or blueish lesions that do not come and go that require biopsy. There are many white lesions some of which need minor treatment so see your dentist and have the lesion evaluated and treated if necessary however most do not require treatment.

Professional action: Only a doctor will be able to biopsy your lesion. It's rather a simple surgery an you will be satisfied when the result comes back from the lab. You should do it when the lesion appears on your tongue.
