Panic in pregnancy: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is commonly used safely in pregnancy for sleep and other reasons. Unfortunately it has little helpfulness in "major panic." i don't know what "antianxiety pills" the neurologist wants to prescribe, but benzodiazepines are not a good idea in pregnancy. Antidepressants such as prozac, zoloft, and Celexa have anti-panic effect and can be used safely in pregnancy. A psychiatrist can help.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) won't help: I would recommend that you go on a benzodiazepine antipanic agent as soon as possible to get the panic under control. Simultaneously an antidepressant anti-panickagent such as zoloft (sertraline) should be started so that you can taper off the benzodiazepine within four weeks. It's important for a number of reasons to get the panic under control during pregnancy. Not only is extremely uncomfortable but the anxiety puts a tremendous amount of stress on your body and therefore on youruterus and developing baby. Please have your neurologist talk to your gynecologist. If the gynecologist still says no and does not have reasonable rationale for it, then i would go with what your neurologist says. Obtaining a psychiatric consult can also be very helpful in these situations. Best wishes for a happy and healthy delivery.
