Several causes: There are several possible causes of heavy periods with large blood clots. Sometimes hormones are off such as lack or diminished progesterone, or thyroid or prolactin being abnormal. Sometimes the cause is something in the uterus such as a fibroid or a polyp. Too much soy, or gaining or losing weight can also impact periods. You will need to work with your doctor to figure this out.

Heavy periods: If your periods are too painful and normal pain medications don't help, see a GYN for consultation and maybe US to determine whether or not you have masses/fibroids, endometriosis, or adenomyosis. Hormonal control using contraceptives like the pill/patch/ring/IUD/implant, used continuously, can lighten or even stop your periods, decreasing pain. Ablation is an option if done childbearing.
