Several things: Most common cause of toe numbness is nerve compression. Either from having a deformity of the great toe combined with a shoe that presses on the nerve. Other causes are tarsal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerve in your back and peripheral neuropathy. See a neurologist or a foot specialist (ortho or podiatric) for a diagnosis.

Nerve compression: Nerve compression at some level unless there was an injury. Can be a simple as changing shoes or wearing inserts. Could be the result another neuropathic condition. See physician.
