During Orthodontic?: The most common time an unerupted tooth is dragged into the dental arch is an impacted cuspid or "eye tooth". There was a time when a gold chain was fixed around the impacted tooth and the chain attached to the orthodontic arch wire with an elastic. I woiuld be surprised to see a gold chain these days as modern alloys have additional benefits. More often a steel alloy bracket or button is bonded.

On one of the links: When a bracket with a gold chain is bonded to an impacted tooth to guide the tooth into the arch in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, an elastic thread is tied to a link in the exposed gold chain and either a bracket on a tooth or the arch wire. As the tooth begins erupting, tying of the elastic thread is repeated to put tension back on the chain until the tooth becomes visible.

Elastic tubing: Guiding impacted tooth into place requires an attachment on the tooth (with or without chain), braces that have been used to open adequate space for eruption, and elastic latex tubing to pull the tooth toward the braces. Ask your Orthodontic Specialist to discuss the mechanics with you.
