New Technology lens: There 2 types of new implants which are placed in the eye at the time of cataract surgery. One is called a multifocal which corrects both distance and reading vision thus lessening dependence on glasses. These implants work in appropriately selected patients. The second type is the toric lens implant which corrects astigmatism.. It gives sharper vision without glasses and works very well.

Multifocal vision: The new iol (intraocular lenses) are of 2 kinds, one allow you to see far and near (like a bifocal contact lens) and the other corrects for astigmatism. There is i believe one on the way that might do both but not yet on the market. Since cataract patients are senior the multifocal lens is a great advantage (but somewhat costly).

Intraocular lenses: There are several styles of intraocular lenses (iols). The traditional type corrects either for distance or near, depending on the patients' preferences. The newer lifestyle iols provide improved vision for patients who have astigmatism in their glasses correction or who are interested in seeing well for distance and for reading after the surgery is performed.
