Extraction: If the nerve of the tooth is dying and it sounds like it is, your only options are, root canal, extraction or to live with pain. Usually temporary fillings have a sedative effect to quiet the nerve. If it's only when you bite, the temporary maybe needs a bite adjustment. Long lasting hot/cold or spontaneous ache likely indicate the need fore a root canal to preserve your tooth.

Patience: Your dentist is trying to avoid the root canal therapy, too... that's why s/he placed the temp filling in an effort to calm down the inflamed nerve in the tooth. If the pain is escalating and it appears that the pain will not subside, then you have no choice but to proceed with the root canal therapy or extract the tooth.

Root canal best: Root canal best. Only other option is extraction.

No-brainer: If your tooth is restorable, have the root canal and save your natural tooth.
