By itself, no: You can develop an infection in the gums if food debris is left between the tooth and the gums, allowing bacteria to grow and use the food as a food source. Your gums can also seem infected as a result of an abscess of a tooth that has found a way through the bone and gums and causes swelling at the exit portal.By itself, a chipped tooth wont cause gum infection.
