If teeth are like bone, the hardest part of the body; so how can a mere, puny toothpaste have an effect on them?

Anticariogenic: Tooth paste contained fluoride, which if retain on the surface will provide Fluoride ion in exchange for the loss of hydroxyl ion during enamel demineralization due to low acidic ph.

Makes it stronger: Enamel is the hardest substance in the body, yet it can be destroyed when bathed in a constant acid bath, such as diet sodas, regular sodas, sucking on hard candies. Toothpaste counteracts the dissolution of the enamel because of the fluoride. Fluoride gets out of the toothpaste, and is then free to exchange with the calcium in your enamel, which makes the enamel stronger and more resistant.
