Brush, brush, brush: Massaging the gum is beneficial since it increased the circulation blood flow to the tissue. However, as the gum is infected, you need to schedule a check up with your dentist to treat the underlying cause (gingivitis/periodontitis/abscess). Bleeding will establish drainage, reduce gum swelling, and relieve any potential pain. Brush and floss even it bleeding occurs. Doing so should help.

Add stuff: Besides message, add brushing, flossing and perhaps a medicinal dental rinse like chlorohexidine (Peridex). Do you need a deep cleaning? You dentist can also put you on a low dose of medication of 10-20mg of Doxycycline (antibiotic). Take the time and go over how to improve your mouth with your dentist. IMF you are not satisfied with the answer...seek a second opinion.
