Pathology: Swelling of the gums associated with a wisdom tooth could be a localized infection around the crown of an erupting tooth known as a pericoronitiis. It could also be due to an acute abscess and in some instances, the swelling could be related to a possible cyst. A clinical evaluation with the appropriate x-rays by your dentist can provide you with a more definitive diagnosis.
