Tooth paste abrasion: Tooth paste is the culprit for tooth abrasion according to dr. Tom abrahamiam dds ms, who is a board certified prosthodontist. He suggest brush as often as you like, but use very little or no toothpaste. For the freshening effect sip a small about of mouth wash when you brush.

Be careful: Too much of a good thing can be harmful. Over brushing can cause tooth abrasion, especially where crowns and roots meet, and gum recession. Brush 2x/day for 2 full minutes by the clock. Brush gently, don't' scrub hard. Use pea-sized portion of toothpaste. Note that most adult decay and most gum disease starts between teeth where toothbrush can't reach--use floss or waterpik. See dentist.
