Neglect mostly: People get cavities mostly because their mouths have a prevalence of cavity causing germs (strep mutans/lactobacillus sp.). There are many other factors to consider: saliva, diet, ph, and others influence your overall cavity risk. The factors you can control to reduce risk are diet and home care. Reduce consumption of sugary/acidic foods/bevs. Brush/floss daily, and chew sugarless gum w/ xylitol.

Great question!: I believe knowing why we brush teeth will help most people to brush better. In addition to 'cavity prevention', brushing away oral bacteria is important because: (1) if he has a gum disease--common after 30 Y.O. And up--his bacteria infect others, including you and your children. (2) if he has small bleeding gum pockets, the bacteria also enter the blood and infect the body!
