Probably a lot: Depression is thought to be related to levels of neurotransmitters in the brain which is why people use the term "chemical imbalance". This is genetically determined. Someone genetically vulnerable to becoming depressed may not become depressed unless something happens in their life that causes them great stress or sadness. So circumstances in one's personal life can definitely have an impact.
