Usually not: If the tooth involved has major decay and is close to the nerve, I will periodically rough prepare the tooth for a crown and make a temporary crown to wear for a period of time to determine if the tooth also needs nerve treatment. A crown should feel the same in the mout as an untreated healthy tooth
