Depends: Compression fracture of the vertebral body can occur with aging, and often is not surgically repaired, although there are procedures known as vertebroplasty performed by radiologist in certain situations. Traumatic fracture of the back can result in neurological injury, and surgery is often performed to stabilize the fracture site. So, depends on circumstances of break, site, x-ray findings.
