Until extraction: If the tooth is vertically fractured, it is most likely unrestorable. As such, it needs to be extracted. The fracture, moving pieces of tooth, and bacteria and food lodging in the crack only add insult to injury. Have it tended to asap.

I'm assuming: That the tooth is slated for extraction now. Sadly no set time frame to determine when the pain goes away - but hopefully it gets less day by day. Did the dentist take the tooth out of occlusion. Get in to see the treating dentist asap. Hope this helps.

Vertical fractures: Vertical root fractures resemble what a splinter does. It tracts bacterial down the split and causes the tissue to fester and be painful. Anti-biotics , anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers help. But the cure is to remove the tooth. Period. Stay off it till that happens.
