A member asked:

Could getting stabbed by a used insulin needle cause hiv?

HIV: This is possible, but the needle would have had to been used by an hiv+ individual and you would then have had to have used it very shortly thereafter. If there is a major question in your mind you should be receiving prophylaxis and being tested for HIV with pcr for viral rna. Go and see someone with expertise in this area. Good luck and hope all is well.

Needle Stick ; HIV: It is very unlikely. Two things would have to be happening. The patient using the needle would have to have HIV and there would have to be fresh blood in the needle. There are other diseases to worry about as well. Like hepatitis c. If you have any risks for HIV then there is urgent testing to be done. And infection can be prevented if a doctor acts within 72 hours of the exposure.
