A member asked:

Newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic. my hba1c result was 99 does this mean i have been had it for longer than 2 weeks?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably months: Presumably your a1c was 9.9. The glu-hemoglobin is a relatively slow reaction, which is why this test examines overall glu control over the previous 2-3 months. However, if you were normal, and then your glu shot up to 500 and stayed there, it could raise your a1c somewhat quickly. Hard to say. Usually, b-cell failure occurs gradually. Your glu values were prob increasing over the prev months.
