A member asked:

6yr male w/ pica. no autisim/delays of any kind. ferritin level 18, rbc normal, cut all dairy and taking vit w/iron. how long until relief?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends...: Ferritin level seems normal for your 6yr old. Iron def. Anemia is only 1 possible cause for pica. No single test confirms pica. Iron ; zinc are implicated due to poor nutrition or lower nutrient levels due to diet. I assume his weight is stable. No diarrhea or issues with health. Lead exposure and parasites are no concerns? Behavioral training with much positive reinforcement needed w/dietitian.
