I had auras of colorful zig zags before a migraine . what causes auras to happen? my aura really affected my whole vision. is that normal for an aura?

?is it migraine: Apparent you have history of cardiac issues, and apparently also diabetes, and BP problems at a young age. Although you could also have migraine auras from the neuronal suppression over the occipital area, I am more concerned about the circulation within the vertebrobasilar system, and would recommend a ct-angiogram study, which is quite benign but very useful. Your aura characteristics may help.

Auras: Auras are caused by the migraine (vasospasm of a blood vessel) occurring in the occipital lobe of the brain. The are where vision is perceived causing the zig zag symptoms preceding the headache.
