I had auras of colorful zig zags before a migraine . what causes auras to happen? my aura really affected my whole vision. is that normal for an aura?

Although you could also have migraine auras from the neuronal suppression over the occipital area, I am more concerned about the circulation within the vertebrobasilar system, and would recommend a ct-angiogram study, which is quite benign but very useful. Your aura characteristics may help.

Auras: Auras are caused by the migraine (vasospasm of a blood vessel) occurring in the occipital lobe of the brain. The are where vision is perceived causing the zig zag symptoms preceding the headache.
