Usually small amount: Typically anal fissures will produce a small amount of bright red blood on the toilet paper after a bowel movement. Hallmark symptom is a burning, stinging pain after a bowel movement. If it doesn't hurt, it's not a fissure.

Painful? Painless?: Anal fissures typically have a tearing, or burning pain during defecation, with or without bleeding. Internal hemorrhoids typically can have a little to a lot of bright red blood on toilet paper, on (not in) stool, may even drip into toilet bowl-often painless. External hemorrhoids can bleed, often with pain (different nerve supply). Other more serious problem can bleed as well. Call your doc.
