Melanin : Can cause dark discoloration of the gums based on ethnicity and it is normal. If the the darker color (e.g. Dark red) is caused by gum disease , it will also involve inflammation due to engorgement of blood due to irritants, e.g. Tartar, plaque, calcular deposits, .. Please see your dentist if it is raising some worries.
