MRI: Most back pain issues are of the soft tissues between the bones, the nerves and the muscles. These are not well seen on regular x-rays. Most pain is not about the bones. Thus an MRI is needed to see these structures clearly.

Explanation: Mri is superior to ct because it shows the soft tissue structures such as disks, muscles, cysts very well. In addition, it shows the back in various orientations, called planes without the need for reconstruction algorithms (computer work), and does not deliver radiation unlike ct.
