A member asked:

Glycolysis: glucose to gluc-1, 6-p is labeled as an irreversible step but, gluc-1, 6-p converts to glucose by gluc-6-phosphatase.y call it irreversible?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hypoglycemia defense: Hexokinase: g->g-6-p. G-6-p can be used for glycogen (thru g-1-p), atp, or to acetyl coa for fa synthesis. Glycogenolysis involves gly->g-1-p, then g-1-p to g-6-p. G-6-p to glucose requires glu-6-phosphatase, which is essent only in the liver, which is why liver is so important to maintain blood glu. Hexokinase may be irreversible, but the reaction g/g6p is not (in the liver).
