Yes: You could ask for a cast but there are a few considerations. Most fractures of the third toe you can walk on; and also in terms of immobilizing the toe itself, a wide shoe does as much as a cast. A short leg cast is really only more helpful if the hind foot or ankle needs to be immobilized. Thanks.

Middle toe fracture: If the fracture is not displaced or dislocated, he could be wearing post op shoe or fracture walking boot for support. Please ask your orthopedic doctor for these alternatives as casting may be not be necessary if only the 'middle' toe is fractured.

Sounds like overkill: I would 'buddy splint' them to the two adjacent toes to keep the alignment correct. A surgical shoe would be fine, but a cast and crutches sounds like a bit much to me personally.
