Son fractured middle toe.he has crutches but is very uneasy on them. has ortho appt. would asking for a cast be ok? so he can walk? very active kid!

Yes: You could ask for a cast but there are a few considerations. Most fractures of the third toe you can walk on; and also in terms of immobilizing the toe itself, a wide shoe does as much as a cast. A short leg cast is really only more helpful if the hind foot or ankle needs to be immobilized. Thanks.

Sounds like overkill: I would 'buddy splint' them to the two adjacent toes to keep the alignment correct. A surgical shoe would be fine, but a cast and crutches sounds like a bit much to me personally.
