A retinal tear: Progressing to detachment can evolve over minutes to months. The process is influenced by many variables (i.e. Amount of vitreous traction, size of tear, location of tear, patient activity, etc.) and not all tears will progress to retinal detachment. Flashes of light associated with a retinal tear usually indicates traction and needs to be evaluated by your eyemd asap.

Quickly: A retinal tear can lead to a detachment in a hurry. The best treatment is to see a retina specialist as soon as possible. Time is vision! A retinal tear can be treated in the office. A retinal detachment usually requires surgery. Flashing lights are a common symptom of retinal tears or detachment.
