Can stress cause constipation?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stress constipation: Stress can definitely cause constipation. An anal fissure can make the constipation even worse by causing the internal sphincter to tense, which makes it hard to defacate. Pain and blood-streaked french fry- like stool results. It is painful and a vicious circle. Surgical treatment of the fissure may help as may steroid suppositories. I don't know of any psychotherapy studies on these dynamics.
