leg pain: Shooting pain down the leg is typically due to sciatica and most likely a herniated disc. Overweight can clearly add to the problem.

Possible Strain: You might have a back strain or possibly a disc herniation causing a sciatica or radiculopathy. However if you're severely overweight the doctor may have concerns that there could be recurrence of the disc herniation. It would behoove you to consider weight loss prior to undergoing surgical intervention..
