see dentist: Tartar, also known as calculus needs to be removed above and below the gum line by a licensed dentist or hygienist. Toothpastes are helpful in removing plaque, the soft bacteria on the teeth. By attempting to remove tartar yourself, you can cause a periodontal infection. Most adults require at least every 6 months visits to scale teeth, some requiring more often to prevent bone and tooth loss.
