Probably not: Pain alone, without other neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, incontinence) can be addressed in most patients without surgery. Physical therapy, massage, pain relief medications, and other interventions are usually effective in controlling pain and improving functional status. Surgery may be helpful in certain circumstances; however, less invasive treatments should be tried first.
