A member asked:

Is it normal to have sore, blocked ears when you have an upper respiratory infection? even after taking antibiotics?

Uri with blocked ear: Quite common. Try to pop the ears by grabbing your nose and blowing hard with you mouth closed. If this does not work try some afrin nasal spray for only 3 to 4 days. Over this you will get addicted to it. Give the antibiotic time to work. The infection is going to take 7 to 8 days to start to clear. Good luck. Hang in there !

Yes: This usually happens because your eustachian tubes, which connect your ears to your pharynx, get blocked with thick secretions, which creates pressure. Antibiotics are useless for colds and should not be prescribed. Decongestants will be more effective.
