When not moderate: Balance is the key element. May be individualized moderation means that. Excess means that too much time, energy (physical/emotional/psychological) spent on the issue/activity. When activities (or inactivity) cause problems physicallyemotionally/psychologically with home and/or work, school relationships activities, they can be excessive. So can work, school, relationship issues.

Excess: Often when a behavior becomes excessive it is because it is being used as means to cope or avoid situations and people a person feels threatened by or does not have the faith to deal with. This then becomes a habit, like excessive drinking or eating that takes you away from the conflicts in your life temporarily. My best.
