How can an addict learn to use in moderation?

Controversial ?: The conventional wisdom and 12 step program philosophy and teachings would say that he or she cannot learn to use in moderation. That being said, there are certainly some who can and do accomplish this. Many young people who drank and drugged heavily in college seem to "mature out" of it, without treatment. A program managed moderation teaches this with, in my experience, mixed results.
