Muscle control: In the first few months a baby has selective voluntary control of few muscle groups that will increase with age.Early on, the neck extension and turning is one of the strongest. It is necessary early on for feeding and to help clear the airway. When agitated by whatever stimulus they tend to arch. When comfortable they relax.
