Pain in the IV: An iv, or intravenous line, allows direct access to a vein for blood draws or medicine administration. Because placing it punctures the vein, bleeding can occur at any time during the procedure into the surrounding tissue. This can cause pain, swelling, bruising. Applying ice quickly tends to reduce the bleeding, but pain at the site that persists should be evaluated by a doctor.
