not sure: An abnormal TSH is a reason to treat if a repeat test confirms that is abnormal.

Early : Probably, what he means is that the actual thyroid hormone levels (t3 (liothyronine) and/or t4) in his blood are in the normal range. Early in the development of real hypothyroidism, the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels rise but the t3/t4 don't drop. Eventually, though, frank hypothyroidism develops. He needs to be evaluated by a pediatric endocrinologist.
