Cleaning: They are one in the same in many cases. It depends more on severity of calculus, depth of pockets, periodontal health, etc. I wouldn't get bogged down with nomenclature. I would care about quality of service. If you care enough to find out the answer, then call the office.

depth of cleaning: Scaling and deep root planing is generally considered a periodontal cleaning. It tends to be deeper into whatever pockets you may have and often requires some form of numbing.
