GERD: Often, a sore throat in an adult is not bacterial. The cause of inflammation of the back of the throat is either viral, irritation from smoking or very commonly secondary to reflux of acid from the stomach. This high reflux also called laryngeal-pharyngeal reflux or LPR causes three major symptoms. 1.) sore throat, 2.) voice changes, and 3.) cough. See an ENT doctor.
