canker sores: Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are flat, grey painful ulcers that usually do not bleed. Cold sores, which are caused by an infection of the herpes simplex virus, first appear as crusty blisters, and may bleed if "popped". Check with your dentist to be sure exactly what the lesion is.

Canker sores: usually don't bleed. Canker sores are the most common recurrent oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 1-2 weeks. The condition is idiopathic (cause is not known) recurrent aphthous ulcers is usually self-limiting. If concerned see your dentist after 10 days.
