Varies: It does vary in part on surgeons preference and also the nature of the bone and fracture involved. When the screw is removed, there is a hollow bone tunnel left where the screw was that slowly fills in with bone. In some situations, this can act as a stress riser to create a new fracture and that is the usual rationale for protecting some patients with a cast after screw removal. Thank you.
