A member asked:

I just had a plate and 7 screws removed from my ankle from a fracture 3 years ago - how long does it take for my bones to get to a point where my risk of refracture from the screw holes is reduced/at a point where i dont need to worry?

Healing from removal of orthopedic hardware can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months, depending on your health, weight, history, etc. Easy regular activity poses little to no threat of refracture. Avoid activities that cause strong swift increases in load at the ankles including jumping, skydiving, karate/martial arts, kickboxing, and other similar activities. Talk to your orthopedic surgeon.

It depends on the nature of the fracture, and the size/orientation of the screw holes. Agree that typically bone strengthens over 6 months on average, but speak to your surgeon about your specific case.
