Cat allergy shots: Immunotherapy or "shots" for cat allergy are usually only effective at preventing symptoms with brief exposures to cat, like visiting a friend with a cat. Having a cat in your house will usually overwhelm the effect of the "shots" and you will experience symptoms. Also, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat. All cats have skin which produce dander which causes allergic symptoms.

Not a good idea: Allergy shots are the best treatment for allergies, and are very effective for short exposures such as visiting homes with pets, but the constant, daily exposure to an animal in the home overcomes some of the effects of the shots. Many people who get congested and sneezy will still own pets, but you're in for a world of hurt if you start to wheeze or get recurrent sinus infections.
