Variable: The length of relief varies, and some do not get any relief at all. Risks include spinal headache or leak, headache, infection, and nerve injury. The steroid effect is usually a local one, and systemic effects are relatively minimized. However, some can have elevations in blood sugar, as well as some other risks of steroids. You should see a surgeon if you aren't getting better.

it varies...: If you respond to an epidural injection it may last from weeks to 6 months or longer. They are often administered in a series of three injections with a week or two between injections. If you have no response after a series of three, most pain physicians would consider you as having failed that treatment. Note: there is considerable variation in medical opinion and no absolute consensus on this.
