I take atorvastatin ~ 3 mnths, have severe muscle pain in upper back, unexplained, chest ct clear, culd ths be a side effect?

Yes: Tendinopathy up to tendon ruptures, muscle pain - all are known side effects of the "statins". Consult with the dr who prescribed you the medication about the dosing and possible changes.

Maybe: Consider discussing with your doctor to try a month off atorvastatin. If your symptoms resolve, you have your answer. The doctor can check muscle enzymes, CPK and aldolase, but these may be normal even if the Atorvastatin is causing your symptoms.
