If any imaging: is necessary, MRI is preferable to CT. CT has relatively poor soft tissue contrast resolution and generally cannot detect injuries to ligaments, tendons, and muscles unless they are very severe. MRI has exquisite detail in this setting and can detect even very minor injuries to those structures.
