Slowly: I assume that you are taking 40mg every 12 hours for a total dose of 80mg per day. You should wean slowly, usually by 10% increments. I would decrease to 30 mg bid for 2 weeks, then 20mg bid for 2 weeks, then 10mg bid for 4 weeks. If at any point you have true withdrawl symptoms, you can increase to the higher level briefly. Clonidine at low doses can reduce withdrawl symptoms.
